Tanzania - alignment + harmonization
The most recent report in the ‘AHA’ series on Alignment and Harmonization of Health Research looks at the health research system in Tanzania.
This is a joint study by COHRED and the National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in Tanzania. It provides an overview of governance and management in the country’s health research system.
The report pays special attention to alignment and harmonization as a pathway to strengthen health research in the country and to sharpen the focus on national priorities.
Key findings:
• Tanzania has a well developed health research system and agenda.
• Political support for research is given from the highest level and capacity building is recognised as an essential means to achieve development.
• Many donor agencies have shown a willingness to move forward on aid harmonisation. But health research is not yet a part of these debates. Health research projects are largely funded by external resources; creating the potential for these partners to influence the country’s priorities and the work of Tanzanian research institutions.
The COHRED AHA initiative and its studies is the first to look at the Paris Declaration on Aid effectiveness from the perspective of health research.
Country studies have been completed on Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, as well as a synthesis report.
